Is this conversation with a human or with an AI? This question has been one of the top questions in the past few years. The business world has its eyes on a few AI companies that are destined to either change the world or harm it unintentionally. As a twelve-year business consultant, I’ve assembled a list of the top conversational AI companies you ought to know. Some you know, and others you might not.
Top Conversational AI Companies (2024)
AI is like a swimming pool that everyone is jumping in nowadays. But some are really diving deep into it. So, I won’t mention X using Grok as it’s not yet advanced enough to be worth mentioning. I’ll make it dramatic by doing a countdown to the top conversational AI companies, with some news about them and why they’re the best.
5. Anthropic’s Claude
If you haven’t tried Claude, it’s similar to ChatGPT but it’s bypassing it in some measures. For instance, a week ago I conducted an “AI joke experiment” with Claude, GPT, and Gemini. Claude was certainly outperforming in many areas.
The company was initially backed by Jeff Bezos (and/or Amazon), which put it on the radar. But before that, it had investments from Sam Bankman-Fried, FTX’s founder, who was sentenced to 25 years in jail for committing fraud. But FTX sold their share in Anthropic for almost double the amount, going from $500 million to around $880 million. Then, after Jeff Bezos invested in Anthropic, a market giant joined this party, Google.
Currently, it has raised over $7.6 billion, which is an enormous sum. But it is what’s needed to compete with ChatGPT. Their conversational ai capabilities stem from their work that has been funded by many (and apparently any) giants in a very short time. It very much could outperform ChatGPT in the long run, which puts it as a contender to be in the top conversational AI position.
4. OpenAI’s GPT
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the most used conversational product of the past 20 years. But there is a huge question mark around their management’s limits. Their CEO, Sam Altman, mentioned multiple times that they’re working on Artificial General Intelligence. They almost never speak about regulation and they’re a private company. Let’s back up in case you don’t know what Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is.
Simply put, AGI is supposed to be equal to or bypass human capabilities in cognitive tasks. Right now, ChatGPT is not better than you in anything that requires thinking. AGI aims to change that, putting our creativity’s value at risk. Scientists might not need to find the cure for cancer because AGI would do that. That sounds great, right? But as with any great technology, it comes with high risks.
We won’t have cancer anymore. But also, we won’t have any task that we can do to benefit mankind. We’ve always had jobs ever since the beginning of time, whether that’s a hunter or a gatherer. If AGI does everything for us, then our evolution is affected. That is particularly why Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and a thousand other experts have signed an open letter about the potential dangers of AI. AGI makes this threat pop.
Additionally, what makes this company truly newsworthy is the situation that happened with their board ousting Sam Altman. Then Microsoft hiring Altman and a few people on the team almost instantly. Then, the board gets fired a day later, and Altman returns to his job. This all happened because the board saw some worries about growth and the vision of Altman. It doesn’t get more dramatic.
Nonetheless, ChatGPT is one of the top conversational AI companies of our time.
3. Nvidia (Honorable Mention)
Behind every meal are some ingredients. Behind AI, there’s Nvidia. It’s the hardware that feeds it all. The influence that this company has nowadays on the AI world is major. They’re supplying chips to almost every major AI player. This is particularly why they gained more than $1.6 trillion dollars of market cap (read this figure again).
They’re non-stop growing and supplying everything to everyone. They’re salespeople and excelling at what they do. You never take a second to look at a weapon’s manufacturer in a major war. If AI is what matters, then Nvidia is the energy source. The company controls 95% of the AI chip market, at the moment.
They do not have a conversational AI app at the moment, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced something similar. Additionally, they’re in charge of how this market operates.
2. Microsoft’s Copilot
Most of the players mentioned so far, with the exception of Nvidia, are worthy conversational AI companies but have a long way to go because they’re still private. True impact and worry come from a company that already has a major notable influence in the market. There’s no better company than one that is the world’s most valuable company, Microsoft. The reason why it’s the most valuable right now is because of its investment in OpenAI. If Nvidia is salespeople focused on selling, Microsoft is sales gurus focused on pushing products down consumer’s throats.
The only problem is that it always works. Microsoft Teams, a product that is not that good, is used by the majority of that market instead of Slack, for example. Microsoft bundles everything and sells it in an un-refusable offer. Why would you pay OpenAI $20 per month if you can pay Microsoft half of that and get much more?
Microsoft does not care about AI regulation whatsoever, and it has proved that with Sam Altman and the OpenAI board’s concerns. Rather than understand the board’s AI concerns, Microsoft instantly hired Altman to continue with his vision. This shows the world that Satya Nadella and Microsoft are financially focused on AI and nothing more.
They have Copilot, a conversational AI app that is ChatGPT with rich parents.
1. Google’s Gemini – The Top Conversational AI Company
Google will probably be the top conversational company when it comes to AI. The reasons are quite simple.
- They have quite an advanced AI – Gemini Advanced, which is now as good as GPT and Claude.
- They have more influence than any other tech company on this planet as they control search, which is what everyone sees every day multiple times.
- They are financially focused on growing.
OpenAI launched GPT, and Then Google announced a “Code Red” and freaked out. They worried about their dominance in the market. Nowadays, they’re starting to slowly put all those fears aways and get on top of things. But the fact that they have a huge mobile market with their Android OS, YouTube, and Google Search, makes their influence major by all means.
In a nutshell, they decide what you see. Not only that, they’re starting to incorporate AI in deciding what you see. Antitrust lawsuits are getting thrown at major tech companies these days. Google is taking one of the biggest punches in that area.
Change occurs with time and we’ll only know it when it’s probably too late when it comes to AI. At this moment, AI is not to be feared but used properly. Most of the tools online are jokes compared to the potential of AGI. It’s the latest technological evolution that will change the way we live. Let’s try to make this right by choosing the right products.
